Intel is working on a new type of processor!

Intel acquired the artificial intelligence company Movidius about 6 years ago. Since then, however, no serious action has been taken by Intel in this regard. However, according to the latest information, Intel is working on a new type of processor designed to increase the speed of artificial intelligence. No official announcement has yet been made about the new processor, but Intel recently released a new driver for Linux that specifically mentions this processor.

Intel plans to accelerate AI operations

The system, called “Versatile Processing Unit” (VPU), is expected to be used in Intel’s 14th generation Core (Meteor Lake) processors. The VPU is claimed to improve the device’s performance in computer vision and deep learning applications.

Intel is dropping game support for some CPUs!

Intel is dropping game support for some CPUs!

Chipmaker Intel is ending support for game drivers for its older processors. Instead, the company announced a new classification structure.

Broadly speaking, there are two types of AI workloads: training and inference. Training focuses on using large-scale datasets to develop AI applications with specific capabilities, while inference feeds these systems with new data to produce an output.

As a product of the amount of data involved, the education side takes much longer due to the high level of computational intensity. In contrast, inference should be completed almost instantaneously. This clearly shows that the computational requirements differ significantly.

While details are apparently scarce, Intel’s new VPU appears to be designed to accelerate workloads on client devices. It is not yet clear whether the company will take advantage of similar technology in other CPU series.

Meteor Lake is expected to be introduced towards the end of 2023. That’s why we won’t see any new VPU chips anytime soon. But the chip’s presence offers further insight into Intel’s broader strategy. We’ll see what Intel’s new processor can achieve in the coming years.

So, what do you think about this step taken by Intel to accelerate artificial intelligence? You can share your opinion with us in the comment section.
